6 Tips to Help Prevent Debit Card Fraud

Written by Andrea Klinedinst, Compliance Assistant

Holiday time usually means a time of more spending, and subsequently, more debit card transactions, which makes this an ideal time to be mindful of debit card safety. As debit card fraud numbers continue to rise, MNB has some suggestions to help you prevent becoming a victim of fraud.

  1. Sign up for MNB’s online banking. When you sign up for our online banking, your account information is right at your fingertips on any smart phone, tablet, or computer. Online banking allows you to easily keep track of your accounts since you can check them daily and quickly catch any unusual activity. You can even choose to turn off your card when you are not going to be using it.
  2. Set up account alerts. With online banking, you can set up alerts to help monitor your account. There are several types of alerts available to track your accounts, cards, and transactions by email or text to make monitoring even easier.
  3. Review your monthly statements. When you receive your account statement, review it for any suspicious activity. Signing up for eStatements makes this even easier. You can check your eStatements right from your online banking, and you will receive an alert as soon as your statement is available.
  4. Keep your account information secret. Do not share your debit card information, PIN, or account information. With this knowledge, anyone would be able to make unauthorized transactions. The best practice is to not share this information with anyone.
  5. Watch out for phishing scams. Scammers can use phishing messages to try to get access to your debit card and other banking information. By replying to a fake email asking for bank information or by entering your information into a fake website, you could be giving scammers access to your accounts. When making transactions online, be sure to use reputable sites, and never give out your information via email or text message.
  6. Securely dispose of old debit cards and bank papers. It is good practice to shred expired debit cards and old bank statements to keep your information safe. With less of your financial information lying around, there is less of a chance of being compromised.
By using these simple techniques, you can help prevent debit card fraud. If you notice fraud on your account, contact our Customer Service Department immediately at 877-647-5050 or visit any location. Be informed and stay safe.
